GOAL:
To find out if it is possible to reduce the destruction caused by earthquakes!
PROPOSAL:
So much could be learned about earthquakes if information could be shared and analyzed by students from several schools located at various points along the Pacific Rim, also know as "The Ring of Fire". Middle School students from ISJ in Tokyo, San Francisco, the International School in Mexico City, and TAS in Taipei, could join together in producing a collaborative Web-based project to research earthquakes in their own locales and then compile and publish their findings and possible conclusions on the Web.
OBJECTIVES:
This project will enable participating students to:
1. explain what causes earthquakes, how they are measured, and how and to what extent they can be predicted.
2. relate the causes of earthquakes to the specific geology of an area.
3. describe how buildings could be constructed to save lives during a severe earthquake.
4. observe a relationship between earthquake/volcanic occurrences on opposite sides of the Pacific plate.
5. share carefully researched recommendations with local officials
