• All 7th grade students are encouraged to apply, but due to travel restrictions only 30-32 of these are selected for participation.

• Applications are carefully read and evaluated on their quality and content.  Application questions are:

1. Which subject is your favorite? Why do you like it more than others?

2. Please name one person that you respect very much and describe what it is about them that you regard as admirable.

3. Do you feel you work hard in school? Please explain your answer.

4. Think of a person you feel you would have a difficult time working with. Now imagine you have been assigned to do a very important project with this person. What would you do so you would both get a good grade? What strategies would you use to work successfully with this person?

5. Why do you want to participate in Operation Starship?

6. Explain how you would be an asset on this trip.

7. Of all the 7^th graders you know well, name three, besides yourself, who you feel would make really excellent Starship Crew Members. Why did you choose them?

8. If you have had a brother or sister as a member of a previous Operation Starship trip, please answer the following:

Please name them, what year did they go on the trip, what grade are they in now or if they have graduated from TAS, what are they doing now.

• All Middle School teachers are asked to confidentially rate applicants in the following areas:

Responsibility:  Does this student act in a responsible manner and meet all expectations and requirements willingly.  Is he/she on time with required work?

Ability to make up work:  Since students will miss up to ten school days, does he/she have the motivation to make up any missed assignments promptly?

Focus on trip objectives:  Will this student eagerly focus on the learning experiences offered?

Peer Relations:  Does this student show kindness and consideration for others while actively participating in group activities?

• Scores on applications and teacher ratings are recorded and sorted.  Students with the highest scores are then selected as crew members.
