The Pearson Pregnancy - Verses for the Pearson Birth

In addition to all the relaxation, coaching cues, positioning, and other strategies for a good birthing experience, it is our desire to keep a spiritual emphasis on this precious time through scriptures that remind us of God’s presence and through prayer. After all, prayer is one thing that really helps Jenn relax. In addition, the Bible is full of Psalms and passages that remind us of God’s presence, comfort, and renewing strength. The verses listed below are just a few that we thought might be helpful and encouraging during our experience of labor.

Prayer – Pray confidently, knowing our needs will be met

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Heb 4:16

Prayer/Positive Thinking – Pray about this and concentrate on the progress we’ve made

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. (And tell her too!)

Phil 4:6-8

Prayer/Coach Encouragement – When you don’t know how to pray, the Spirit does

The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

Rom 8:26-27

1st Stage/Laboring through the night and remembering God

O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. Rest/visualization – God designed my body to give birth to this baby he also created!

O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.

Transition/Rest – God restores me

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Transition – Wave upon wave of contractions may come, but God is with me

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Transition - God remembers me

Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains! For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones. But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me." "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!

Isa 49:13-15

God’s compassion – God gently guides me and my baby – he carries us

See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and his arm rules for him. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

Isa 40:10-11

Transition/God’s Compassion – Remember God’s love amidst apparent turmoil

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you.

Transition/God’s Presence – Remember the hope of this new life; God rejoices!

The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing."

Transition - God’s Presence

"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Transition – Remember God answers me when I cry to Him

But you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head.

To the LORD I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.

God’s Compassion – God knows my body and knows how much it can take

As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

Transition – Yes, you can do it!

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Transition/Stage 2 – God renews my strength when I need more

The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Isa 40:28-31

Transition/2nd stage – God will help me and give me strength

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isa 41:10

Stage 2 – God has led me through the preparation and will strengthen me now!

You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.

Ps 18:28-29

For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?

It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.
