This week Rebekah had such a hearty appetite I didn't think I'd be able to keep expressing enough milk for her. At the beginning of the week, we began giving her a bottle at her middle-of-the-night feeding each night. But by the end of the week there was no need because my milk production had increased.
However, the weekend also signaled the return of my plugged duct problem and the beginning of a breast infection. I just had a little plugged duct on the right breast on Saturday morning, but by afternoon it had begun to hurt a lot. Part of the reason for the added pain was that I was beginning to feel the let-down reflex, which is apparently a little uncomfortable to begin with...add a breast infection and it really hurts!
By evening I had a very low fever just under 100 degrees. I was taking some herbs my midwife had recommended to counter the infection, but obviously we needed something more. So around 7PM on Saturday I called and left a message with my doctor's answering service. Though my regular doctor was out of town, another doctor called back and then called in a prescription for Cephalexin to my pharmacy.
I was crazy enough to go to the pharmacy by myself to pick up the prescription, and Joe was nuts enough (or maybe just not realizing how bad I was starting to feel) to let me. I definitely felt lightheaded during the trip and realized afterward that it probably wasn't the best idea for me to go myself!
I spent the night on the sofa downstairs, drinking a lot and pumping milk every 2 hours. My temperature got up to about 102, and I felt like I had the flu - lots of chills and achiness. By Sunday morning I was feeling better. My fever was gone and the breast didn't hurt nearly as much. The plugged duct was nearly gone too. We stayed home and rested anyway since Joe didn't want me to have a relapse.
